Exhibits at the Maryland Zoo

The Maryland Zoo is one of the best and most popular attractions in the state of Maryland. The zoo is located in Druid Hill Park, Baltimore. The history of the zoo goes back to 1876, when this beautiful place opened, therefore being considered to be the third oldest zoological park in the United States. More than 2,000 animals live at the zoo. They are “organized” in various wonderful exhibits that you will get the chance to enjoy when coming to the zoo. Here are they:
African Journey



The African Journey is the largest area of the zoo and puts on display a wide array of species originating from Africa. Exhibits include:

  • Ground Hornbill
  • African Aviary

Maryland Wilderness
 

Maryland Wilderness is another important area at the Maryland Zoo. Besides the numerous exhibits, displaying animals found in Maryland, it also features The Children’s Zoo. Here, visitors get to jump across lily pads, watch otters swim over their heads, explore a cave, and climb into giant bird nests. Exhibits in this area include:
  • The Bog, featuring the endangered Bog Turtle;
  • The Stream, including river otters and red fox;
  • The Cave, featuring many small exhibits such as snakes, newts, and bats;
  • Marsh Aviary & Lily Pads, featuring numerous duck species and other Maryland birds


  • Giant Tree & Slide, featuring native reptiles and amphibians;
  • The Farmyard, featuring rare domestic breeds that visitors can pet;
  • Meadow, featuring box turtles and American toads.
Polar Bear Watch


The Polar Bear Watch is one of the main attractions at the Maryland Zoo. It features several polar bears that visitors can watch from underwater viewing areas or from windows of an actual massive Tundra Buggy that the zoo purchased from a Canadian company creating these unique vehicles for viewing polar bears in their natural habitat.
Base Camp Discovery
Base Camp Discovery is located between the African Journey and the Polar Bear Watch. This zoo area presents numerous educational activities that are organized by various animal ambassadors and zoo educators. More often that not, the Base Camp Discovery showcases animals such as:
  • Boa Constrictor
  • Egyptian Tortoise
  • Painted Turtle
  • Box Turtle
  • Corn Snake
  • African Gray Parrot
  • Indian Runner Duck
  • Eastern Screech Own
  • Diamondback Terrapin
All these wonderful exhibits will not only allow visitors to admire plenty of wonderful animals, but also to learn many interesting facts on them and even pet some of them. The Maryland Zoo is clearly a great zoological park that all people who find themselves in the area should visit.
